<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At <a href="https://www.freefallaerospace.com/">FreeFall Aerospace</a>, developing new technology also means helping develop the next generation of professionals.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year, FreeFall welcomed interns who worked alongside the team on real products, contributed to testing, prototyping, operations, and product development, and gained firsthand experience in a professional aerospace environment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rather than observing from the sidelines, FreeFall interns are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, contribute to active projects, and learn directly from the team. From inflatable reflectors and optical testing to deployable structures, thermal vacuum testing, procurement, and product assembly, this year’s interns gained experience far beyond the classroom.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For many of them, the experience also clarified what they want to pursue next while offering a closer look at the collaborative, iterative process of bringing aerospace technology to life.</p>

									<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Aidan Parks is a junior studying Systems Engineering at the University of Arizona after transferring to the university this semester. He got his start in engineering through a <a href="https://pimajted.org/">Pima JTED Career &amp; Technical Education</a> (CTE) program, where he began building the foundation for the engineering path he is pursuing today.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">During his internship, Aidan worked on FreeFall’s lenticular reflector project, testing materials considered for use as membranes in inflatable antennas. His work focused on understanding their optical characteristics so the engineering team could evaluate their potential for future reflector designs.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Through the process, he gained experience in optics, test operations, writing test plans and procedures, data collection, and communicating results.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">
<blockquote style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">“I learned a lot about optics and test operations. I also learned and practiced writing test plans and procedures, collecting the data needed to make engineering decisions, and communicating results with stakeholders.”</blockquote>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">A highlight of his internship was visiting the University of Arizona’s Applied Research Building, where he helped test FreeFall’s 1-meter reflector inside the thermal vacuum chamber.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">The experience reinforced Aidan’s interest in aerospace engineering and his desire to eventually work on instruments and systems that support space science and exploration. It also gave him a deeper appreciation for the importance of properly designed testing in making engineering decisions.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Aidan will return to the University of Arizona for his junior year while continuing to work with FreeFall’s testing team as development of the inflatable reflector progresses.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Outside of engineering, he enjoys hiking with friends, reading with his book club, and watching movies.</div>

Ruiz is entering his senior year at the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/">University of Arizona</a>, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences in Physiology and Medical Sciences with an emphasis in Exercise and Extreme Physiology.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Coming from a medical and physiology background, Miguel brought a different perspective to FreeFall. During his internship, he helped develop a streamlined procurement and inventory system using Smartsheet, creating a workflow for submitting, approving, purchasing, receiving, and inventorying materials. He also helped organize the lab to support the new process.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">One of his favorite experiences was working on the 20th MATE hardware unit, following it from procurement and receiving through assembly, finalization, and shipping.</div>
<blockquote style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">“It was very rewarding to see it come in as individual parts and eventually leave as a completed product.”</blockquote>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Beyond learning about aerospace technology and antennas, Miguel developed professional communication skills and gained confidence working in a field that was initially unfamiliar to him.</div>
<blockquote style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">“I learned that with the willingness to adapt, ask for help, and learn from others, I can contribute even in an environment where I initially feel like I don’t belong.”</blockquote>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Miguel will return to the University of Arizona for his senior year while seeking experience under the mentorship of a physical therapist. His long-term goal is to establish a clinic in his hometown.</div>

									<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Gabriel Neff is a senior at the University of Arizona studying Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Classics.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">During his internship, Gabriel worked with FreeFall’s 1-meter and 150-millimeter membrane reflectors. Alongside the team, he helped set up in-house experiments using deflectometry and spot-size measurements to characterize thin membrane reflectors.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">While Gabriel gained valuable technical experience, one of his biggest lessons was learning the importance of asking questions.</div>
<blockquote style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">“I think that I really developed my ability to say, ‘I don’t know what this means; could you explain this to me?’ Dustin Blanchard and the whole team really incentivize making FreeFall a learning environment.”</blockquote>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">One of his favorite moments came at the Applied Research Building, when the team successfully produced a particularly flat and reflective Mylar layup. Seeing everyone contribute to the process demonstrated how quickly a collaborative team can make progress.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">That environment strengthened Gabriel’s enthusiasm for continuing a career in engineering and showed him the value of working on a small team where people depend on and learn from one another.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">This fall, Gabriel will continue working at FreeFall while completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Arizona.</div>

									<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Iker Losada Samano is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Arizona and will begin his third year this fall.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Much of Iker’s internship focused on FreeFall’s Deployable Perimeter Truss Ring (DPTR) project. He also participated in thermal-vacuum testing of the 1-meter lenticular reflector.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">During testing at the University of Arizona’s Applied Research Building, the team introduced him to the concepts behind the facility’s large thermal vacuum chamber. Iker also had the opportunity to work inside the chamber, helping position and tension the reflector.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">His favorite experience was watching the DPTR project progress through multiple versions.</div>
<blockquote style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">“Watching the project evolve from the first design and print to the current version meant we had to overcome many challenges, and I learned a lot along the way.”</blockquote>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">That process taught Iker an important lesson about real-world product development: the first idea rarely becomes the final design. Testing, problem-solving, and iterative refinement are critical to creating technology that works as intended.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">The experience strengthened his decision to pursue aerospace engineering and showed him that a professional engineering environment could also provide opportunities to use his creativity and interests.</div>
<div style="margin-top: 0.5em; margin-bottom: 0.5em;">Iker will return to the University of Arizona this fall while continuing to work part-time at FreeFall.</div>

									<div>Adam Esch is a junior at the University of Arizona studying Electrical and Computer Engineering with a concentration in Computer Engineering.</div>

<div>This year, Adam continued work on software he previously helped develop for FreeFall&#8217;s ASU-AllSky and QLR-MATE projects, maintaining and adding features to code that controls and moves antenna systems. Returning to code he had written nearly a year earlier also taught him the importance of documentation, code cleanliness, and version control.</div>
<blockquote>&#8220;In the courses I&#8217;ve taken, the content usually focused on theory and syntax, not on documenting and future-proofing the code you write.&#8221;</blockquote>
<div>One of Adam&#8217;s favorite moments was seeing the MATE system he helped develop control and track eight stages at once after previously seeing his software operate only one or two. The experience also helped him see a potential career path in something he had already enjoyed doing on his own.</div>
<blockquote>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been working on software very similar to what has gone into the projects here for years, just as a hobby. Seeing my hobby become an integral part of a product running out in the wild has been crazy.&#8221;</blockquote>
<div>Adam will return to the University of Arizona this fall to continue his degree and explore potential research opportunities. Outside of school and work, he enjoys hardware/software projects and landscape photography.</div>								</div>

<p>This year&#8217;s interns contributed across a wide range of disciplines, from reflector testing, optics, and mechanical design to software and hardware integration. Along the way, they gained something hard to replicate in a classroom: experience solving real engineering problems as part of a collaborative team.</p>

<div>For several of the interns, their work with FreeFall will continue as they return to their studies, giving them the opportunity to build academic knowledge and industry experience at the same time.</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.freefallaerospace.com/">FreeFall Aerospace</a> is traveling to Salt Lake City to attend the <strong>40th Annual Small Satellite Conference</strong>, which will be held from <strong>August 23 to 26, 2026</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For four decades, <a href="https://smallsat.org/">SmallSat</a> has united people from industry, government, and academia to investigate the technologies, partnerships, and ideas shaping the future of small satellite missions. This year’s conference will mark the 40th anniversary of those collaborations and highlight innovations leading to constellation success and the next generation of space capabilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We at FreeFall are proud to be taking part in that discussion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Partnering with Arizona State University and the University of Arizona at SmallSat</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the conference, FreeFall will be working with <strong>Arizona State University</strong> in the booth, emphasizing Arizona’s increasing leadership in aerospace research, technology development, and commercialization.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">University partnerships have always been a key element of FreeFall’s approach. By working with researchers, teachers, and students, FreeFall links outstanding academic research with practical industry knowledge and real space applications.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Attendees of the SmallSat event are invited to visit the ASU booth to connect with the FreeFall team, learn more about our current technology work, and discuss new possibilities in advanced satellite communications.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">FreeFall’s collaboration with Arizona universities is helping move new aerospace technologies from research and development toward real-world applications, while supporting the next generation of engineers and space professionals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FreeFall Technology Featured in Advanced Technologies Session</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On <strong>Wednesday, August 26, at 11:30 a.m.</strong>, <strong>Aman Chandra, PhD</strong>, a researcher at the University of Arizona, will give a presentation sharing information about FreeFall’s advanced inflatable antenna systems.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Hybrid Architecture for Scalable High-Frequency Inflatable Reflectors for Small Satellites</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deployable, large-scale antenna apertures operating at millimeter and submillimeter-wave frequencies remain a formidable engineering challenge. Large apertures that can be reliably deployed and operated at frequencies above Ka-band and into the terahertz regime could enable high-capacity radio communications, high-resolution Earth observation from geostationary orbit, and multispectral microwave sounding from small satellites.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">FreeFall Aerospace and the University of Arizona have developed technologies that improve the feasibility of inflatable reflectors at high frequencies, creating a scalable architecture and a pathway toward large apertures deployable from small satellites.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These advances could support higher data rates, improved communications performance, and greater mission flexibility while satisfying the stringent mass and volume constraints of small spacecraft.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The importance of these capabilities continues to grow across <strong>commercial, civil, and defense applications</strong>. As governments and defense agencies evaluate widely distributed satellite constellations and more resilient space-based communications systems, lightweight and scalable antenna technologies could enhance connectivity, increase mission adaptability, and enable reliable communications in contested, remote, or rapidly changing environments.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This presentation highlights the value of combining university research with industry expertise to address complex challenges in satellite communications and remote sensing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Arizona hosts a strong mix of research universities, aerospace and defense companies, experienced space professionals, and up-and-coming technical talent. <h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" data-fontsize="18" data-lineheight="27px"><a href="https://www.freefallaerospace.com/">FreeFall Aerospace</a> has achieved a milestone with its innovative antenna systems, which are now operational on CatSat, a significant NASA CubeSat Launch Initiative project. Launched July 4th in partnership with the University of Arizona, the mission, led by Principal Investigator Dr. Walker and FreeFall Senior Engineer Dr. Aman Chandra, is a technological and educational demonstration. It comprises multiple FreeFall-designed antennas, each addressing unique mission needs.</h2>

<h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" data-fontsize="18" data-lineheight="27px"><strong><em>Can you briefly describe each unique antenna that FreeFall designed for CatSat?</em></strong></h2>
<p>“The first, an <strong>inflatable X-band spherical antenna</strong>, enables rapid data downlink while demonstrating advanced inflatable antenna technology. The highlighted technology of the CatSat mission—This Mylar antenna, compactly stowed for launch, unfolds in orbit to provide a large, high-gain aperture that dramatically enhances data return.</p>
<p>The second is a <strong>patch antenna solution</strong>. We have two of these patch antennas onboard the spacecraft. One was designed for the X-band to serve as the backup downlink solution, and the other was intended for the C-band to act as a radio beacon to be detected by ham radio operators worldwide.</p>
<p>The third antenna developed by FreeFall is the <strong>HF whip antenna</strong> for the WSPR experiment, which utilizes amateur radio stations worldwide to study the conditions of the ionosphere and accomplish the mission’s pedagogical aspects.”</p>

<p>“We had to carefully design the feed for the <strong>inflatable spherical high-gain antenna</strong>. We needed to account for how the RF electronics payload would be positioned concerning the reflector. Therefore, the line feed design was developed and rigorously optimized to minimize spherical aberration while considering the deployment’s payload positioning and mechanical aspects. Our access to the ANSYS HFSS software greatly aided this design work.”</p>

<p>For the <strong>patch antenna,</strong> the challenge was developing a solution that produced circular polarization to maximize the spacecraft’s downlink capability regardless of how it was oriented with respect to the 6.1m ground stations dedicated to picking up X-band signals from CatSat. From a design standpoint, most work focused on optimizing the interactions between the internal structure inside the patch and external features designed to produce circular polarization. Again, the ANSYS software greatly aided in this design work.</p>
<p>The <strong>HF whip antenna</strong> had to be designed to cover all the bands that ham radio operators utilized with the WSPR protocol and network. Therefore, its length was critical for correct operation, and we utilized established amateur radio rules of thumb and engineering practices to complete the design work. Also, the design process involved constant communication between the RF and mechanical teams to account for the deployment’s electrical and mechanical aspects to minimize risk and unexpected outcomes.</p>
<p>In addition, FreeFall designed the physical structure of the HF whip antenna and deployer. At the same time, <a href="https://www.rincon.com/">Rincon Research</a> was responsible for developing the HF upconverter electronics to optimize the throughput and X-band downlink of WSPR data for post-processing and scientific dissemination of the WSPR ionosphere experimental results. Their contribution was crucial to the success of the CatSat mission.</p>
<h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" data-fontsize="18" data-lineheight="27px"><strong><em>What testing phases were critical to ensure each antenna would perform reliably in orbit?</em></strong></h2>
<p>The most crucial test phases for validating the antennas to work in orbit are thermal-vac, vibe, and shock. These rigorous tests ensure the resilience and reliability of the antennas in the harsh conditions of space, providing reassurance to all stakeholders.</p>
<h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" data-fontsize="18" data-lineheight="27px"><strong>CatSat Continues:</strong></h2>
<p>Operating in low-Earth orbit, CatSat orbits Earth 15 times daily, relaying high-definition imagery and conducting ionospheric studies. The mission, led by Principal Investigator Dr. Walker and FreeFall Senior Engineer Dr. Aman Chandra, is not just a technological feat but also an inspiring educational demonstration that we can all support.</p>

As a graduate student, she is continuing her academic journey to complete her master&#8217;s degree in Aerospace Engineering. Shae was an advisor for NASA&#8217;s Arizona Space Grant and Resident Assistant in the Engineering Leadership Community. She held officer positions in the <a href="https://www.uarizonaswe.com/">University of Arizona&#8217;s Society of Women Engineers </a></span><span data-preserver-spaces="true">and was</span><span data-preserver-spaces="true"> the Director of Administration for the Engineering Student Council. </span></p><blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces="true">&#8220;I would like to get more experience developing and testing space and communications-based technologies and learn how to run astrodynamics simulations and calculate communications coverage models for satellites and other spacecraft,&#8221;</span></em><span data-preserver-spaces="true"> Shae explains. </span></p></blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">She received the USRA Distinguished Undergraduate 2023 Thomas R. McGetchin Memorial Scholarship Award and the Arizona Distinction Award. She was a Lillis Foundation Scholar from 2020-2024. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and rock climbing. By interning at FreeFall, Shae aims to gain valuable knowledge in RF technology, which will be instrumental in her future spacecraft projects.</span></p><p> </p><h2><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Jessica Gurney: Navigating the Path Between Academia and Industry</span></h2><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Jessica Gurney, a senior at the University of Arizona, is pursuing a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Astronomy. She is keen to understand the inner workings of a tech design company and evaluate her future career path. </span></p><blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces="true">&#8220;I hope to understand the inner workings of a tech design company to determine whether I want to continue to grad school to do research or jump into the industry to build sophisticated products,&#8221;</span></em><span data-preserver-spaces="true"> says Jessica. </span></p></blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Jessica graduated with Honors in AIT military training. She is also passionate about writing and anything craft-related, including bookbinding. Her inquisitiveness and drive to explore both academic and industrial avenues make her internship at FreeFall a pivotal step in her career journey.</span></p><h2><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Nicolas Renaud: Aspiring RF Engineer</span></h2><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Nicolas Renaud is an Arizona State University senior majoring in Physics and Astrophysics at Barrett Honors College, having made it to the Dean&#8217;s List for the past three years. Renaud is an officer and member of the Society of Physics Students and a student researcher at the Interplanetary Initiative Lab. He has a clear goal of becoming an RF engineer. </span></p><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Nicolas is eager to learn about antenna system designs and operations. His commitment to mastering the technical aspects of RF engineering aligns with FreeFall&#8217;s innovative projects, and we are confident in his potential to contribute significantly to our mission.</span></p><p> </p><h2><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Harlie Rios: Exploring Engineering Frontiers</span></h2><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Harlie Rios is embarking on her journey as a freshman at the University of Arizona, W.A. Franke Honors College, with a dual focus on Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. She was in the Model UN, Racing the Sun, Student Council, Kairos 294 Co-rector, Stem Ambassadors, Spanish Honors Society, and National Honor Society. Harlie earned the CAMUN Vocal Commendation Award and Catholic Schools Week Awards. </span><span data-preserver-spaces="true">She is enthusiastic about discovering engineering&#8217;s real-world applications and gaining hands-on experience. </span></p><blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces="true">&#8220;I hope to learn what an engineer does, get experience in the workforce, and work on some cool projects,&#8221;</span></em><span data-preserver-spaces="true"> Harlie shares. </span><em><span data-preserver-spaces="true">&#8220;This experience will help me determine what I want to do in college and the future.&#8221;</span></em></p></blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">In her spare time, she enjoys reading and community service. 									<p>Empowering Connectivity: FreeFall Aerospace Celebrates Tucson Changemakers Grant for Antenna Innovation</p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Tuesday, March 12, 2024&nbsp;<br></span>Tucson, Arizona &#8211; FreeFall Aerospace, an antenna solutions company, proudly announces its selection for the Tucson Changemakers Grant. Out of over 500 applications, the Groundswell Growth Fund award was presented to FreeFall last week at Hotel Congress.</p>

<p><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Groundswell Capital&#8217;s CEO, Dre Thompson, introduced the Tucson Changemakers Grant Program as a collaboration with the City of Tucson to provide small businesses with flexible, free capital to support their expansion endeavors. The program is part of a newly launched $1 million grant initiative dedicated to helping local small businesses thrive. The </span><a style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: #0c1a2b;" href="https://www.groundswellcapital.org/">Groundswell</a><span style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;"> Growth Fund is designed explicitly for enterprises poised to scale their operations. It provides versatile grant funding applicable to equipment, technology, and expansion efforts to foster business growth and create job opportunities within Tucson.</span></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">FreeFall Aerospace, founded in the summer of 2016 by Doug Stetson and Dr. Chris Walker originated from a collaborative effort on a NASA project. The company has since evolved, focusing on developing cutting-edge technology in <a href="https://www.freefallaerospace.com/antennas/">small spacecraft communications</a> and low-cost ground stations. With ten employees and over half a dozen products in various stages of commercialization, FreeFall Aerospace has become a key player in the Tucson business landscape.</span></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">FreeFall&#8217;s proposal outlined a strategic plan for growth throughout 2024-2029. The project aims to accelerate the tools and equipment needed for the technical team to propel the organization to the next level. At the top of the list are a thermal test chamber and a 3-D printer for use in their technology lab. FreeFall Aerospace, currently seeking venture capital, has laid out a comprehensive growth plan and strategy. The Tucson Changemakers Grant will be a crucial catalyst in executing this plan.</span></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Commenting on the award, Rick Kettner, VP of Product Development of FreeFall Aerospace said,&nbsp;</span><em><span data-preserver-spaces="true">&#8220;Capital equipment is a significant factor in getting a startup technology company off the ground. This grant will help us take the first step in executing our growth plan, ensuring we can meet the rising demand for our products and services.&#8221;</span></em></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">In addition to the employee base growth, FreeFall Aerospace plans to expand its infrastructure, facilities, tools, and support equipment. The company strongly prefers local procurement, partnerships, and recruitment in the Tucson area. With a rich heritage with the University of </span><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Arizona, FreeFall seeks to contribute to the local economy, build community partnerships, and provide opportunities for skilled graduates. This project aligns with FreeFall Aerospace&#8217;s commitment to cementing its foundation in Tucson and contributing to the community for years. The company anticipates growing its employee base by 150%, significantly boosting the local workforce and economy.</span></p>

<p><span class="post-content__introduction">The Emerge Accelerator connects DoD mission partners with emerging technology teams and startups at our nation’s top research universities.</span></p>
<p>Cutting-edge companies will demonstrate how intellectual property from top research universities can be commercialized for dual-use, civilian, and military markets during the next cohort of National Security Innovation Network (NSIN)’s Emerge Accelerator program.</p>
<p>The 12-week program offers participants funding to accelerate venture creation and technology transition. The program also offers access to feedback, advisors, and potential partners from the DoD and private industry. While pursuing federal and commercial markets is highly encouraged, the NSIN Emerge Accelerator excels at providing new ventures with the tools necessary to do business with the federal government and the private sector.</p>
<p>13 companies representing 13 unique academic institutions were accepted into the 2024 NSIN Emerge Accelerator. The teams have reached a <a href="https://techlinkcenter.org/news/technology-readiness-level-dod/">Technology Readiness Level(TRL)</a> of 4 (validation in a relevant environment) or greater, and have a technology vertical focus on artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), deep tech, autonomy, cyber security, and other general technology solutions.</p>

<p>Covert Defenses enables zero-downtime operation of industrial control systems in cyber-contested environments. Their solution allows for continuous operations, even if penetrated by an insider.</p>
<p><strong>EMP Technology Solutions</strong></p>
<p>Academic Institution: University of Texas at Dallas</p>
<p>EMP Technology Solutions has developed a system for radioisotope identification that is portable, scalable, modular, and network-compatible. Their system works quickly, detecting and identifying radioactive threats in about five seconds.</p>

<p>Fourier is commercializing the breakthrough platform technology of thermoformable technical ceramics. The company is bringing large-scale production to the manufacturing of technical ceramic parts for the first time.</p>

<p>L5vel is developing autonomy for all-terrain logistics. Its product, L5vel Prime, automates all-terrain forklifts.</p>

<p>MicroAvionics is developing innovative levitation technology to enable flight in the mesosphere (50-100 km altitudes). The technology uses sunlight to generate thrust, eliminating the need for onboard fuel or power, offering a sustainable method to carry near-space payloads in a region that is inaccessible to conventional aircraft and satellites.</p>

<p>Mithril Technologies, Inc. is developing and commercializing a new type of space-based mesh reflector antenna using a unique electrostatic actuation technology invented at MIT to enable active beam focusing, shaping and steering. This active control allows flexibility in GEO satellite communications &amp; jamming, signal intelligence, and space-based weather monitoring, with lighter &amp; simpler structures than phased arrays.</p>

<p>FreeFall Aerospace is disrupting the communications infrastructure for the New Space Economy with low-cost, low-power antennas to support satellites. Its technology is as novel as it is cost-effective and has garnered industry attention.</p>

<p>&#8220;Our patented technologies and antenna designs are based on spherical geometry,&#8221; said the <a href="https://www.freefallaerospace.com/dan-geraci-ceo/">Tucson company&#8217;s new CEO, said Dan Geraci</a>. &#8220;This leads to very low-power, low-maintenance, and low-cost antennas.&#8221;</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Demand for thousands of new antennas in the coming decade is accelerating. FreeFall&#8217;s technology is aimed squarely at this demand.</p>

<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re uniquely positioned to disrupt the terrestrial and space antenna marketplace. The timing is right,&#8221; Geraci said.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The company, co-founded by Doug Stetson and Chris Walker with seed funding from <a href="https://www.uaventurecap.com/">UA Venture Capital</a> and its CEO Fletcher McCusker, was incubated out of Tech Launch Arizona. It was honored as a Startup of the Year Finalist in 2022 and Innovation Leader of the Year in 2019. Walker was named Inventor of the Year in 2018, and the company received TechConnect Defense Innovation Awards in 2017 and 2018.</p>
<p>FreeFall prides itself as a flexible, family-friendly employer–there are two office dogs, in fact–and a creativity juggernaut for engineers.</p>
